This isn’t as exciting as the other blog posts BUT I’ve been wanting to paint our exterior beige window and door trims black for so long! The original colour was so blah and boring and the black gives it that nice touch of boldness without being too bold. It also matches our brick much better! Our trim was VINYL so I thought this would be more difficult than it was, but it turned out to be super simple – just required time & patience. See below on how I did it and what products I used!

BEFORE:
Here’s what it looked like before any paint went on – notice the beige doors and window trim!

PAINT:
BUY A GOOD EXTERIOR PAINT. I REPEAT, BUY A GOOD EXTERIOR PAINT.
Don’t cheap out on this or it won’t last! We bought an exterior paint that was specifically good for woods/vinyls that protected from mold/mildew. We chose to go through our local Home Hardware store and use their brand of pain, Beauti-Tone in a Velvet finish (halfway between semi-gloss and matte). Did you know you can ask them to colour it with other brands like Sherwin Williams? I got the colour Tricorn Black by SW and love it! It’s basically a true black! Don’t be fooled, it looks like a grey black in the can but dries completely black.

PREP & APPLYING
We used a sanding cube and lightly sanded the entire surface of the vinyl. This allows the paint to adhere to the surface much better. We then used painter’s tape and taped off areas of the window we didn’t want paint. TIP: If you do get paint on the glass grab some nail polish remover and it comes off like a dream!
We chose the easiest method and used a brush! If you have a paint sprayer and have the patience to put drop clothes everywhere, it definitely would turn out a but better as it would be a smooth even job vs. showing some brush streaks.
COATS
The first coat looked awful (as it usually does) and made me question if I just destroyed our windows and doors lol. The second coat looked wonderful, but it still needed one more to get the most coverage. I recommend doing 3-4 coats on your exterior if you want a sharp look!
FINISHED LOOK:
Let me know what you think!! Would you try this out and paint. your trim?! What do you think of the bolder colour?!
